Howdy folks! The Scale of Things have been recently recovering from the wonderful madness of Mobi Des. No need to fret, a full wrap-up is on its way. In the meantime we’re busily beavering away at a couple other projects…
Our next endeavour is a project that focuses on women in Melbourne for the festival by Craft Victoria, Craft Cubed (see http://craftvic.org.au/craft-cubed/satellite-events/workshops-events/diy-pads) . Together with Carla Pascoe, whose thesis topic was the history of menstruation, and Soumitri Varadarajan, who works on maternal health, we are presenting an event inspired by a number of research projects looking at maternal health and menstruation.
While some women love having their period, and others would give it up in an instant, menstruation is still largely a taboo subject. The ‘End of Menstruation’ is currently a hot topic around the world with some advocates saying that menstruation has outlived its purpose; for women who choose not to have periodic cycles, a permanent solution must be found.
The workshop, a do-it-yourself session on making reusable cloth pads, will include the showing of Period: The Movie and a friendly discussion on the topic while, drinking a glass or two of wine and learning to make beautiful pads.
We are holding two separate workshops, and would love you to join us in a session of sewing, socialising and challenging ideas. And yes, you will leave the workshop having made your very own reusable pad! So overcome the ‘yuk’ factor, embrace your inner feminist, buy a ticket for the workshop, and tell your friends!
There will be a workshop held this Friday 19th August, 6pm – 8pm. Another will be held Saturday 27th August, 3.30pm – 5.30pm. Both sessions will be held at Thread Den, 422 Brunswick St, Fitzroy.
